Here’s my illustration of Angela Bassett in Moschino at the 2023 Oscars. Bassett is beyond gorgeous is this royal purple organza gown with a mermaid silhouette and a large bow at the bust. A Bulgari serpent necklace and a Judith Lieberman disco ball evening bag complete the look.
By the way, I am working on an illustrated e magazine. The magazine is my visual love letter to all of the divine and craveable fashion, beauty and decor trends that inspire me. The magazine will include: (1) high-fashion, concept driven editorial illustrations; (2) illustrated style guides; (3) illustrations featuring fresh-off-the-runway trends; and (4) profiles on fashion muses, past and present.

Hands down, my favorite look from this year’s Grammys red carpet was Cardi B in Gaurav Gupta Couture 2023. This stunning cobalt blue gown, with sculpted three-dimensional forms framing Cardi’s arms and head, functions as both an art piece and fashion.

One more thing… you can support this project by supporting me on Patreon. On Patreon, I provide my supporters with behind-the-scenes access by sharing sketches and some sneak peeks at illustrations I’m currently working on. Also, depending on the membership level selected, at least once a month I share the process (from sketch to completed illustration) that led to the final version of an illustration that will appear in the magazine. As soon as I saw Jenna Ortega on this year’s Golden Globes red carpet, I knew I had to draw her in this beautiful gown. Jenna wore a sheer brown pleated dress from Gucci’s Spring 2023 collection. Although the floor length dress features a train, the cutouts on the bodice keep it from completely overwhelming Ortega’s petite frame.

This illustration features a look from Proenza Schouler’s Spring 2022 collection. Something about fringe screams joy to me. It’s almost impossible to wear a dress with fringe and NOT twirl every chance you get. I opted to go with a long braided ponytail for the hair, because it is a simple yet dramatic way to echo the movement of the fringe. Also, the dangling earrings further the feeling of movement in the illustration.

I created this illustration as an example of the type of work I will include in the magazine. The first issue is slated to be available for purchase Spring 2023. Although this image will not appear in the inaugural issue, prints of this illustration are available for purchase in my Etsy store.

Here’s my illustration of one of my favorite looks from the 2022 Met Gala. Laura Harrier embodied the Gilded Glamour theme. Her silver and black custom H&M gown featured a built in corset, and was paired with a chunky multi strand pearl necklace. The overall look managed to fit the theme, but still felt modern and fresh.
Almost skipped doing an Oscars red carpet illustration this year, but I just couldn’t resist drawing Timothee Chalamet in this suit from Louis Vuitton Spring 2022 collection.
I’ve been considering trying my hand at including men in my illustrations, so seeing Timothee Chalamet’s red carpet look was just the inspo I needed to give it a try.
One final red carpet illustration… until the Golden Globes in 2022 of course. This illustration features Dua Lipa’s red carpet look from this year’s Grammys. Just like Zendaya at this year’s Oscars, Dua’s look was also inspired by Cher. FYI, the hair flip in this illustration is a nod to Cher as well!
Dua wore a custom Atelier Versace dress, which was covered in crystal mesh and featured a Swarovski crystal embellished butterfly on the bodice of the gown.

As promised, here is another red carpet drawing that has been sitting on my iPad.
I’ve noticed that there are two people who I seem to draw almost every red carpet season. One is Regina King and the other is Zendaya. Honestly, both women rarely disappoint when they hit the red carpet.
Zendaya’s Oscars red carpet look was inspired by Cher. She wore this stunning custom yellow Valentino dress paired with Bulgari jewelry. Beachy boho waves added an ethereal vibe to this swoon worthy look.

Usually I post illustrations of my favorite red carpet looks a few days after the event. But my illustrations from this year’s Met Gala, Oscars and Grammys have been sitting on my iPad, until I posted this illustration on my Patreon last week (I’ll mention more about my newly established Patreon account at the end of this post).
This illustration features Anok Yai’s stunning red carpet look from this year’s Met Gala. Her Oscar de la Renta gown is embellished with crystals in the shape of stars, moons and flowers. Sheer black opera gloves and an oversized black feather shawl complete the Josephine Baker inspired look.

The last red carpet look I illustrated was Regina King at the 2020 Oscars, which was just before the start of the pandemic. As the 2021 red carpet season approached, I was not sure that I wanted to draw any red carpet looks this year. Obviously that uncertainty did not last very long.
I’m a fan of Regina King’s acting, directing and red carpet lewks. So given my affinity for Regina King, it makes sense that seeing her in this custom Louis Vuitton gown made it impossible for me to not draw this red carpet (by way of Zoom) look.
