Runway Look: Lanvin Fall 2017

Current Cravings

Taken as a whole, Lanvin’s Fall 2017 collection featured a mix of menswear influenced pieces paired with very soft and feminine elements. Some of the individual looks, however, were ultra feminine with little to no menswear influenced elements. This particular illustration features a look that combines several elements that are quintessentially feminine. Cascading ruffles in dusty pink and lace couldn’t be any more soft and delicate, but still manage to convey a sophisticated vibe.

Runway Look: Elie Saab Couture Spring 2017

Current Cravings

I love these two runway looks from Elie Saab’s Spring 2017 Couture collection because they are a modern take on retro ladylike glam. Both dresses feature a figure flattering silhouette rendered in sumptuous fabric and adorned with gold and jewel encrusted embellishments. To me, these dresses are every bit as sexy as body conscious designs.

Oscars 2017: Hailee Steinfeld in Ralph and Russo

Current Cravings

Stunning from head to toe, Hailee Steinfeld wore one of my favorite looks from the Oscars red carpet. I’m certain that the reason I like her overall look is because I am enamored by looks that epitomize an ethereal and edgy aesthetic. Taken alone, this Ralph and Russo dress, which features folds of translucent fabric covered in hand painted flowers, is gorgeous. I love that her styling team opted to leave the dress sheer, rather than line it. The sheerness keeps the dress from being too saccharine, in my opinion. In addition to the sheerness of the dress, a smoky eye and an almost sculptural updo gives the overall look a bit more edge. The result is an ethereal vibe that doesn’t risk resembling a fairy princess costume. Nothing short of styling alchemy.

Blogger Portrait: NYCxClothes

Blogger Portraits, Current Cravings

My latest blogger portrait features Shelcy and Christy, the sisters behind NYCxClothes. Simply put, their IG page is a gem. These sisters share a sense of style that is youthful, yet sophisticated. But you can tell from their wardrobe choices that each sister has an unique take on she styles her own look.

Runway Look: Giambattista Valli Couture Spring 2017

Current Cravings

Giambattista Valli’s couture shows usually end with a series of voluminous and decadent tiered tulle gowns, and his Spring 2017 Couture show was no exception. And because I’m a dessert first, then dinner type of person, I couldn’t wait to see the ball gown confections that comprise the finale of the runway show. Don’t get me wrong, the show was filled with lovely pieces that I definitely want to illustrate, but I had to draw this exquisite tulle ball gown first.

Golden Globes 2017: Emma Stone in Valentino

Current Cravings

There were so many divine looks on the Golden Globes red carpet this year, so I had to draw another one (you can see the first one, featuring Lily Collins, here). Emma Stone looked amazing in this Valentino pale pink gown adorned with stars.

Below is my first attempt at creating an animated piece. I’ve been wanting to play with animation, and the celestial vibe of this gown inspired me to give it a try.

Flat Lay Sublime Cravings Sophisticated Punk

Style Page: Sophisticated Punk

Current Cravings, Illustrated Style Guide, Style Page

Flat Lay Style Page Sublime Cravings Sophisitcated PunkBefore I get into the details of this “Sophisticated Punk” look, I want to share something with you. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about style as a means of creative expression. And although I love keeping up with and illustrating what’s new and fab in fashion, I enjoy educating myself about timeless style elements. Moreover, I adore combining and playing with disparate style elements. This “style page” is my first attempt at sharing my love of researching and playing with different style elements.  In addition to keeping up with trends, I will continue to research iconic style elements and influencers and will share my take on them with you—via my illustrations of course. I hope you’ll come along on this journey with me.

Now, onto the “Sophisticated Punk” look. This look is a mix of sleek separates and elements that reference punk fashion. In the 70s and 80s, punk culture was all about rebelling and challenging the status quo in music, fashion, and more. But many designers, including Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Riccardo Tisci, have embraced punk elements in their designs. So now, edgy punk elements such as patent leather jackets, torn T-shirts, tartan, and combat boots are now fashion essentials.

Style the Trend: Romantic and Edgy

Current Cravings, Illustrated Style Guide

Download a pdf format version of the style guide here.

Some of my favorite fashion oriented blog pieces feature a blogger’s take on how to style a particular trend multiple ways, like “3 Ways to Style Over-The-Knee Boots.” Because I love styling advice blogs, I’ve been contemplating experimenting with creating trend oriented styling advice posts, but with my illustrations of course. Honestly, I initially wanted to create a guide featuring multiple fall trends, but I decided to take a baby step and focus on a single trend for my first attempt at an illustrated style guide. Since this post is a little bit of a departure from my usual content, I’d love to hear what you think about the post and if you’d like to see more illustrated style guides on my blog. So here is my take on how the style the Romantic and Edgy Trend:

Style the Trend: Romantic and Edgy

What I love about this trend is that the looks are ultra feminine with a healthy dose of edge. Simply put, this trend is all about integrating tough and edgy elements with an overall romantic aesthetic. The most approachable way to try out this trend is to wear a moto jacket with a floaty patterned dress. For those who have already embraced the floral dress and moto jacket combo, you can take this trend a step further by choosing floral and brocade patterned pieces in moody dark colors, instead of bright colors. Also, go beyond utilizing a moto jacket to toughen up your outfit by trying out more refined edgy pieces, such as cropped leather pants or high heel combat boots.

There are endless ways to achieve this fashion vibe, but here are a few looks that may inspire you.

Try an undeniably feminine dress in a dark floral pattern with high heel hiking or combat
boots. Look for dresses with ultra feminine silhouettes, think ruffles and frills, in darker  moody colors. Notice that unlike the moto jacket and floral dress combo, both elements of this look  have both feminine AND edgy components. This dress has a feminine cut but is in a darker edgier  palette. Also the boots are edgy, but the heels make them more feminine.

For this look, a frilly sheer statement blouse is paired with leather pants in an of the moment cropped fit. A long skinny scarf completes the look. This ensemble, pulled from Chloe’s fall collection, is ethereal and floaty on top and tough girl chic on the bottom. Create your own take on this look by combining separates: wear a very feminine over-the-top statement piece with a slick yet tough piece. For this look,
the feminine piece is the top and the edgy piece is the bottom. But there’s no rule that states that the frilly statement piece can’t be a bottom and the edgy element a top.

Wear a jewel tone velvet dress, in a romantic dancer inspired silhouette, over a black turtleneck. Ballet inspired dresses are frequently made in fabrics and colors associated with a soft and feminine aesthetic, think floaty fabrics and soft pinks and flesh tones. But a jewel tone velvet dress in a ballet inspired style is the epitome of romantic AND edgy. Let the dress be the centerpiece of the look by combining it with sleek and dark elements, like a turtleneck, tights, and heels.

By the way if you want to see more content like this, I am working on an illustrated e magazine. Runway Look: Jason Wu Spring 2017 Ready to Wear

Current Cravings

Hope you’re not sick of the “off-the-shoulder” trend, because at NYFW there was an abundance of collections that featured designs with exposed shoulders. I’m not over the “off-the-shoulder” trend yet, but I’m a bit annoyed by the overuse of the term “cold-shoulder” in blog posts and articles that feature the trend. Of course if I could come up with a clever, but not overused, term to talk about this trend, I would have used it in this post—so who am I to criticize!

At any rate, I love these 2 shoulder-baring looks from Jason Wu’s Spring 2017 Ready-to-Wear collection. I’m a fan of Jason Wu’s structured, sophisticated and feminine designs. And as with most of his collections, there are always so many looks that speak to how I want to dress.

Runway Look: Sachin and Babi Spring 2017 Ready to Wear

Current Cravings

Sachin and Babi’s Spring 2017 Ready to Wear collection features ballet inspired dresses that are not only beautiful, but extremely wearable. Elegant yet effortless, the collection is filled with dresses that are floaty and graceful, yet not overdone. Combining elements like tulle, ruffles, and lace can easily take a dress in an opulent, over-the-top direction. The pieces in this collection, however, manage to evoke an airy but polished vibe.
